Cody's Bio
Cody Zeller is nearly impossible to ignore both on and off the basketball court—not only because of his seven-foot frame—but also because of his natural wit and contagious sense of humor, which has captivated fans across the country. Most recently, Zeller played a crucial role in the Miami Heat’s 2023 NBA Finals run, providing toughness and a team-first attitude. Before his time in Miami, he also spent eight seasons in Charlotte and a year in Portland.
Read MorePrior to getting drafted by Charlotte, Zeller had a notable basketball career within his home state of Indiana. His incredible basketball IQ paired with his natural fluidity on the court was noticed from a young age as he made national headlines as a basketball standout at Washington High School in Indiana. He not only led his team to three Indiana State Championships but he was also named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2011, the state’s highest honor for high school players. Zeller was also named a McDonald’s All-American before committing to play for the Indiana Hoosiers.
During his freshman year at Indiana, he led the Hoosiers to a 27-9 record including a historic victory over top-ranked Kentucky on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Christian Watford. After his freshman year, Zeller had the opportunity to enter the NBA Draft but decided instead to return to Bloomington for his sophomore year. In 2013, the Indiana Hoosiers dominated the college basketball landscape spending 10 weeks ranked #1 in the country and all but 2 weeks in the top 5. After a nail-biting victory against Michigan on the last day of the regular season, Zeller and the Hoosiers were crowned the outright Big Ten Champions for the first time since 1993. Three months later, Zeller was selected fourth overall by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2013 NBA Draft. Eventually, Zeller was able to return to campus to complete his degree in management in 2017, through the Kelley School of Business.
When playing for the Charlotte Hornets, Zeller became a beloved figure among the fans. Known for his work ethic and dedication to the game, he consistently showcased his skills as a reliable and versatile player. Zeller’s ability to contribute on both ends of the court, whether it was scoring in the paint, grabbing rebounds, or providing solid defense, made him an essential part of the Hornets’ roster for nearly a decade.
Off the court, Zeller actively supports philanthropic endeavors, utilizing his NBA platform for positive impact. He is a strong advocate for NBA-Basketball Without Borders, promoting the sport and social change in underprivileged communities worldwide. He also demonstrates his respect for military families by supporting TAPS, a program offering comfort and assistance to those grieving the loss of a loved one.
The foundation of Zeller’s character, family values, faith, and love for basketball all started during his childhood in small-town southern Indiana. He grew up with loving parents that taught him the importance of education, respecting others, and working hard. He continues to look up to both of his older brothers, Luke and Tyler, who each had notable NBA careers as well. He credits his childhood and upbringing for the success that he has had on and off the court as an adult. Cody established the LACF with the goal to celebrate and preserve the joy, curiosity, and innocence of childhood by supporting organizations which provide resources for children and families to achieve their highest potential.
Programs
Kicks for Kids
Kicks for Kids is a fundraising and awareness campaign to highlight non-profit organizations close to Cody’s heart who are doing good work in the community. With design assistance from children at the organizations and led by Charlotte artist Ryan Bare, each of Cody’s game shoes are customized. After wearing the shoes in game, Cody donates each pair to the organization to use for fundraising purposes. In addition, each group receives a $15,000 grant from Like A Child.
During the 2019-20 season, the following organizations participated in Kicks for Kids:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas, Hemby Health Children’s Hospital, TAPS, Riley Hospital for Children
This season, A Child’s Place was the December participant and the shoes were a nod to Cody’s favorite holiday movie, The Grinch. Through the grant and donation of shoes, A Child’s Place will be able to provide 150 families with three meals a day for a week.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas
The Kicks for Kids program kicked off in November and paid tribute to Cody’s former teammate Kemba Walker at his first game back in Charlotte.
Kemba was an advocate for BBBS and personally mentored four children when he lived in Charlotte. Each mentee helped design the shoes by creating images and writing messages of what Kemba means to them.
Hemby Health Children’s Hospital
The stars of these shoes where the patients at Hemby! Each child gave Cody his or her autograph to proudly display on his shoes.
In February, Cody honored his home state of Indiana and the kids from Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana’s only comprehensive children’s hospital.
When Cody laced up his sneakers for a January game in Charlotte, he honored the surviving family of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Girard “Jerry” Gass Jr. and the more than 90,000 military surviving family members who are part of TAPS.
